White Sapote – casimiroa edulis
White Sapote, Casimiroa edulis also known as Custard Apple is an evergreen, tropical, fruit bearing tree in the family Rutaceae the genus Casimiroa. White Sapote is indigenous to Eastern Mexico and Central America, reaching a height of 5-16 meters when full grown.
Casimiroa edulis belongs to Rutaceae family to which citrus belongs and it is unrelated to Black Sapote, Diospyros digyna and Mamey Sapote, Pouteria sapota. The tree has a very attractive drooping habit with long branches that can almost touch the earth and an extensive root system that could become troublesome if the tree is established close to paths or buildings. The White Sapote tree is hardy to -3°C. It grows well in regions where citrus could grow.
Leaves are alternate, palmately compound with 3-5 leaflets, the leaflets are 6-13 cm long and 3-5 cm wide with an entire margin, and the leaf stalk 10-15 cm long. The small yellow-green flowers are born in large groups and off and on occur a few times per year, with fruit maturation at 6-8 months later.
The fruit is an rounded drupe, apple sized, 5-10 cm in diameter, with a thin, inedible skin becoming from green to yellow once ripe, and an edible pulp with mostly pleasant taste when ripe that could range from somewhat bland to banana-pineapple like to peach to pear to vanilla sort of flavor. Immature fruits have a fairly bitter taste.
The Casimiroa edulis trees fruit prolifically and a healthy adult tree could produce more than 1000 fruit per year. The pulp could be creamy-white in green skin varieties or a beige-yellow in yellow skin varieties. It contains from one to five seeds that are said to have narcotic properties.
