Wampee,/u>, Clausena wampee, is a minor member of the Rutaceae and distant relative of the citrus fruits. This sub-tropical to tropical fruit bearing tree is a small, 3-8 meter tall, beautiful evergreen indigenous to Southern China and Vietnam. Under favorable conditions the wampee is reasonably fast-growing tree with long, upward-slanting, flexible branches and gray-brown bark scurfy to the touch.

Clausena wampee leaves are spirally-arranged, resinous, 10-30 cm long, pinnate, with 7 to 15 alternate, elliptic or elliptic-ovate leaflets 7-10 cm long and oblique at the base with wavy-margins and fine toothed. Flowers are perfumed, whitish or yellowish-green in color, about 1.25 cm wide borne in slender, hairy panicles 10-50 cm long.

Wampee Fruit

The wampee fruit may be round, or oblong, up to 3 cm long and with 5 pale ridges covering a short length down from the apex. The fruit rind is thin, pliable but tough, easily peeled off the flesh, light yellow-brown in color, dotted with tiny, brown oil glands.

Fruit flesh is sweet grape-like pulp, yellowish-white or colorless, juicy, pleasantly sweet or sub-acid and with 1 to 5 thickish seeds. Wampee fruit is consumed out of hand or made into desserts and jam. A champagne-like beverage is also made by adding sugar to the fruits and allowing for them to ferment.

Wampee Propagation Methods

Clausena Wampee propagation is from seeds which germinate in a few days. It can also be grown from softwood cuttings and air-layers. It is quite tolerant to a range of soils. It needs full sun, frequent watering in dry periods and good drainage is essential. It can survive to a low temperature of -5º C when mature.

Clausena wampee is a member of the family Rutaceae the genus Clausena. Although is only remotely related to Citrus, it can be grafted on a Citrus rootstock and forced into early flowering and fruiting. Clausena wampee is a highly esteemed backyard garden tree in Southern China
