Midgen Berry, Austromyrtus dulcis, also known as Midyim is a small fruit tree or shrub, up to 2 m tall, found in woodlands, heath, forests or rainforest fringes of its native Eastern Australia. Midyin is a member of the Myrtaceae, family the genus Austromyrtus.

The leaves of the Midgen berry are shiny dark green, pointed, 10-30 mm long and 3-10 mm wide with many unconcealed oil glands. They are ordered in opposing rows. The under surface of the leaves has a thick covering of close hairs giving it a light-colored appearance.

The flowers of the midgen berry are small, 7-1 0 mm in diameter, white and with oval flower petals. They are generally borne during springtime and summertime, in its natural environment, in clumps of up to 5 flowers in the top axils, although lone flowers are as well frequent.

Flowers are followed by round, blue-gray spotted fruits up to 10 mm in diameter that mature in autumn. The midyim fruits are berries gathered and consumed fresh by the indigenous people. They have a pleasurable, slightly fragrant and sweet gingery taste. They contain 3-9 pale brown seeds.

This tropical fruit bearing tree is most commonly grown in sandy soils such as coastal sites where there isn’t directly exposed to coastal salt carrying winds. Midgen berry requires little care and pruning is only needed to attain a particular shape. The plant seems relatively free from pests and diseases.

Tree propagation is by seeds which when fresh they germinate within 3-5 weeks. Additionally propagation from cuttings is relatively easy.
