Roselle | Hibiscus sabdariffa (ruber)
The Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa L., also known as the Rosella or Rosella fruit in Australia, is an annual or perennial, tall, bushy shrub or woody-based sub-shrub, growing about 2-5 meters tall. It is indigenous to the Old World tropical regions (Afro-Eurasia). There are 2 principal types of Roselle.
The more significant economically is Hibiscus sabdariffa var. altissima Wester, an upright, sparsely-branched annual mainly used to make jute; a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. Jute from Roselle is an ecologically friendly material for bags, carpets, and other products.
The other type of Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa var. sabdariffa, shorter, bushy forms which have been identified as races: bhagalpuriensi, intermedius, albus, and ruber. The first has green, red-streaked, unpalatable calyces; the second and third have yellowish green edible calyces and also yield fibre and finally, race ruber and its cultivars with edible calyces, an annual, erect, bushy, herbaceous sub-shrub to 2.5 meters tall.
Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves are deeply three or five-lobed, 8-15 cm long, formatted alternately on the stems. Leaves are utilized in curry based meals and young leaves and tender stems are consumed raw in salads or cooked as greens alone or in combination with other vegetables or with meat or fish.
The flowers are 8-10 cm in diameter, white to pale yellow with a dark red spot at the base of each petal, and have a stout calyx at the base. The fleshy calyx is 1-2 cm wide, expanding to 3-4 cm and turns bright red as the fruit ripens.
Roselle Fruit
First Roselle fruit (flower calyces) expected 10 weeks later. It takes about six months to mature. Roselle fruit are used for making drinks, jam (homemade Rosella jam is unbeatable), toasted to make a coffee substitute, added to fruit salads and as filling up for tarts or pies. Fruits of Roselle mature progressively from the lowest to the highest.
Roselle Propagation Methods
Plant propagation is by seed. Roselle is highly sensitive to frost. It succeeds best in tropical and subtropical areas from sea-level up to 1000 meters with a rainfall of about 180 cm during its growing season. Where rainfall is unsatisfactory, irrigation has given good results. It can be grown as a summer crop in temperate areas, fruits will not mature, but the herbage is usable.
Where soil is deep, reasonably fertile, sandy loam is preferably, Roselle will grow and produced well over several years. Calyx production per plant has ranged from 1.5 kg to 7.5 kg. The calyces are either frozen or dried in the sun or by artificial means for out-of-season supply, marketing or exportation. Hibiscus sabdariffa is a member of the Malvaceae family the genus Hibiscus.
