Riberry, ,em>Syzygium luehmannii, also known as Cherry Alder, Cherry Satinash and Clove Lilli Pilli, is a medium sized, near the sea subtropical or tropical forests, native of Australia. The plant can grow to 30 meters in height and a 90 cm in trunk diameter; however it commonly only reaches 7 meters in cultivation.

The Riberry is an evergreen, fruit bearing tree with a dense crown of small leaves above a tall upright trunk with red brown, light grey or pinkish-grey bark with soft papery scales.

Syzygium luehmannii leaves are small, shiny, lance-shaped, pink or red when young. They are opposite, simple, entire, lanceolate to ovate, 4 to 5 cm long on 2 to 3 mm long leaf stalks, extended to a long prominent point. Flowers are born in small panicles at the ends of 2-3cm long twigs. The white or cream petals, form in fours or fives, are 1.5mm long.

The Riberry is generally grown as an ornamental tree and for its fruit. The fruit, a pear shaped 12-15 mm long red berry ripens during summertime, is also known as Riberry. The berry has a sharp, Cranberry like flavor with a hint of cloves.

The fruit has been popular as a gourmet bush food for more than 30 years and is commercially cultivated on a limited scale. It is most commonly in use for making a distinctively flavored jam, and also in sauces, syrups and confectionery.

Riberry Propagation Methods

Plant propagation is by seed and cuttings. Seed germination is undependable, however cuttings strike readily. Syzygium luehmannii is a member of the family Myrtaceae the genus Syzygium.
