Peanut Butter Fruit, Bunchosia argentea, is a small, highly ornamental and hardy tropical, evergreen fruit bearing tree or shrub, up to 3 meters tall, with multiple trunks, indigenous to Central and South America. Bunchosia argentea is a member of the family Malpighiaceae the genus Bunchosia.


Leaves of the Peanut Butter Fruit tree are ovate or oblong, membranaceous, up to 16cm long and 9cm wide. Flowers are 12-15mm in diameter with yellow 5-6mm long petals.

Fruit is about 2.5 long, orange-red in color, good to pick when just beginning to turn orange but still hard. These near-ripe fruits are crisp and taste like raw carrots. Let mature fully indoors. Fruit is mostly consumed fresh, also utilized to make preserves, jellies or jams.

Ripe fruits are sweet, creamy and with a viscous textured pulp resembling a dried fig. It has a clear taste of sweet peanut butter, hence the name of the plant. Ripe fruits can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator or can be parted from the seed and frozen.

Peanut Butter Fruit Tree propagation is by seed. It favors a full sun location but will stand part shade. Bunchosia argentea will also withstand light frosts when established. The plant grows quickly and produces from its very first year.
