Oak Leaved Papaya – Carica quercifolia
Oak Leaved Papaya, Carica quercifolia, also known as Oakleaf Carica, is a deciduous, somewhat rare, dioecious, small, 5-8 meters, fruit bearing plant from the Andes Mountains of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Paraguay. Carica quercifolia is a member of the Caricaceae family the genus Carica.
Carica quercifolia leaves are interesting, like large variants of an oak tree leaf, 8-35 cm long, membranous and hairless on both sides, with a lesser green color on middle side. Flowers are bisexual, yellow-greenish, male flowers are on auxiliary flowerings and the female flowers are largely solitary.
Oak Leaved Papaya Fruit
Oak Leaved Papaya produces small fruit, 5-6cm long and 1-2 cm in diameter, of edible but small commercial value, vitamin C rich, eaten raw. The bright orange peel of the oak leaved papaya fruit is edible as well and the juicy orange pulp has a sweet aroma and flavor quite unusual to the common papaya. Oak leaved papaya is a rather heavy bearer and a mature tree can carry several hundred fruits.
The Oak leaved papaya tree favors a full-sun location and regular watering, except on cold months. While the tree can grow to a good size, it could do fine in large pots and will bear fruits. It does well in most types of soil. Carica quercifolia is a hardy tree, down to the -5°C. However, it can’t tolerate wet soil during wintertime.
Oak Leaved Papaya Propagation Methods
Tree propagation is by seed and cuttings. Oak Leaved Papaya is grown for its fruit and papain which has an assortment of medicinal and industrial applications. Seeds should be planted in sterile soil and in a well vented area as the seedlings can be vulnerable to damping off fungus. The plant grows quite fast when growing requirements are met.
