Mobola Plum, Parinari curatellifolia, also known as Parinari is an evergreen tropical fruit tree with a mushroom like shape. However, appearance changes a good deal from one region to another. The Mobola Plum is a member of the Chrysobalanaceae family, found over a great range of places in Africa, in lowland forest, in forest along streams and enduring alone in areas of cleared up woodland.

It grows at its greatest in areas of high rain fall ( 1000mm or more) reaching a size of 22m tall with a top of 20m across. When rain fall is less it grows up to 15m only. There are 60 varieties of Parinari trees in existence.

The Mobola Plum is a traditional food plant in Africa. This just about unknown fruit tree can nurture sustainable land care and support the potential to advance food supply and better nutrition. Both the flesh and the kernels are used for food. The fruit pulp is of pleasing flavor and it is believed to be one of the best of African wild fruits. The Seeds have dense cases, and are rich in oil content.

The flowers of the Parinari curatellifolia are small, white or pink with stalks draped in dense woolly hairs. The fruit appears early on during the dry season and could be harvested for 3 months or longer. It is used as a snack, fruit drinks from the crashed fruit and to make up alcoholic drinks.

Mobola Plum Propagation Methods

Plant propagation is naturally from seed, coppice and suckers. Fresh seeds should be collected from the trees since those lying on the ground have mostly parasites. Young plants can be planted in groups of 10 or more, as they occur in nature. Trees grow quite fast.
