A popular bush tucker plant in its native Australia, the Midyim Berry, Austromyrtus dulcis, is also known as Midgen Berry and Midjim Berry, grows well in open coastal regions and it can be seen growing wild. The plant has a dense, interlacing form and it can generally be found on the edges of littoral zone rain-forests.

Austromyrtus dulcis leaves are shiny dark green, pointed formatted in opposite rows. The under surfaces of the leaves are hairy, looking paler. New leaf shoots are silky hairy, copper colored. The leaves have dense semitransparent oil glands. Flowers are abundant in spring and summertime and the beautiful foliage is frequently bordered with red new growth.

Midyim Berry Fruit

The fruit of the Midyim Berry plant are edible with a gingery taste usually quite sweet, occasionally a little aromatic, common to Myrtcaeae family, which have aromatic oils. Berries are about 8mm in length, spherical, white and patterned with dark spots. The fruit contains 3 to 9 pale brown seeds. Because of fruit bearing Midyim Berry turns into a bird attention-getting plant.

Midyim Berry Propagation Methods

Plant propagation is from seed. Germination can be slow, but commonly dependable. Fresh made clean seed takes 4-5 weeks to germinate. When young the plant inclines to drape virtually acting like a ground cover but, mature plants can reach a height and width of 1.5 meters. The plant will tolerate some cold. Austromyrtus dulcis is a member of the family Myrtaceae the genus Austromyrtus.
