Matisia, Matisia cordata, is a fast growing, semi-deciduous, tropical fruit bearing tree, indigenous to the lowland rain-forests of Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador and adjoining areas of Brazil. In its native forest it could grow up to 45meters but in cultivation it ranges about 12-15 meters. The plant is a member of the Malvaceae family the genus Quararibea.

The leaves of Matisia cordata are alternate, membranous, 3 cm long and nearly as wide, bunched up in rosettes towards the ends of the branches. Beautiful flowers that are either yellowish white or pale rose tinted are borne along the lesser branches and trunk, followed by the fruits in late summertime and autumn.Matisia cordata.

Matisia Fruit

Fruit are round, 1.5 cm long with a greenish-brown, leathery skin and fibrous but soft, juicy, sweet, orange-yellow pulp, with a flavor reminiscent of pumpkin. The flesh surrounds 2-5 seeds.

Fruit are picked when a pale halo is obvious around the stem and let to ripe 3 – 4 days. The fruit has little commercial value although the plant is rather acceptable as an edible garden fruit tree with fine-looking flowers.

Matisia cordata favors well drained, deep rich soils with high organic matter and a hot humid climate. Matisa trees, particularly young trees, are susceptible to wind and cold and need protection. Pruning is not a requirement except for removal of unhealthy or dry wood. Matisia cordata requires light but frequent feeding.

Matisia Propagation Methods

Tree propagation is by seeds. Trees bear fruit after five to six years when grown in favorable conditions.
