Marang, Artocarpus odoratissimus, is a native to South-easterly Asia, also known as Johey Oak, Green Tarap and Madang. It is one of the most attractive, evergreen, exotic, tropical fruit bearing trees.

Artocarpus odoratissimus is a member of the Moraceae family the genus Artocarpus. It grows to 25 meters tall in tropical areas but less than 20 meters in subtropical regions. It originated in Borneo and has been introduced into neighboring nations.

Leaves are lobed, large, 15-50 cm in length and 10-30cm wide. They are wedge-shaped at base to slightly extending downward the stem, margin smooth or shallowly scalloped, and apex blunt or shortly pointed.

Inflorescence occur in leaf axils, solitary. Male heads are ellipsoidal to Club-shaped and 4-11 × 2-6 cm in size, whereas female heads come covered with sort, soft hairs, simple bracts, mostly shed and simple styles are extended to 1.5 mm.

The Marag fruit tree is susceptible to cold and needs protection below 7°C. It requires frequent watering and productive well-drained soil. High air humidity is always an asset. Marag is less-hardy than the jackfruit.

Artocarpus odoratissimus needs regular watering and favors a humid climate. The large, up to 1.5 kilos, rounded, 20-25cm long and 12-15 cm broad fruit is regarded superior in flavor to Jackfruit. The appearance of the fruit can be viewed as a halfway shape between the Jackfruit and the Breadfruit. It is covered with protrubences; soft spines, that become hard and brittle as the fruit ripens.

The fruit of Artocarpus odoratissimus becomes from a light green to a deep shade of yellowish -brown in color when matured. Flesh is white, juicy, with a strong aroma, pleasant-tasting and soft flavored. Fruit is consumed fresh.

Seeds can be roasted and eaten also. Marag fruit might be harvested while still hard, and left to mature until soft. Once opened up, the fruit should be eaten in a few hours as it loses flavor quickly and oxidizes.

Tree Propagation is by seeds. They must be sown right away on sandy loam soil as they lose their viability rapidly. The seedlings grow rapidly. Artocarpus odoratissimus expected to begin fruiting within 3-4 years from seed planting. It has low yield and short shelf-life as compared to jackfruit. It could be grown as a home garden plant wherever space allows.
