Mango Tree – Mangifera indica
Mango tree, Mangifera indica, is a long-lived, evergreen, fruit bearing tree with some specimens known to be well over 300 years old and still producing fruit. The tree reaches 35-40 meters in height, with a crown radius of 10 meters which could, with age, reach 30-35 meters.
Mango tree is native to India but it is cultivated in a lot of tropical and subtropical regions and distributed widely in the world. Mangifera indica belongs to the Anacardiaceae family the genus Mangifera consisting of numerous species of tropical fruiting trees.
Mangifera indica leaves are, alternate, simple, 15-35 cm long and 6-15 cm broad; when the leaves are young they are orange-pink in color, quickly changing to a dark shiny red and then dark green as they mature. The flowers are born in terminal branched clusters 10-40 cm long; each flower is small and white with five petals 5-10 mm long, and with a mild sweet aroma suggestive of lilies of the valley.
Mango Tree Fruit
The fruit of the mango tree is variable in size and color, and could be yellow, orange, red or green when ripe, depending upon the cultivar. It takes from three to six months to mature. In its center is a single flat oblong stone that can be fibrous.
Mango is rich in a variety of phytochemicals and nutrients that qualify it as a example “super fruit”, a term applied to highlight likely health value of certain edible fruits. The fruit is high in probiotic dietary fiber, vitamin C, polyphenols and pro-vitamin A carotenoids.
Mango Tree Propagation Methods
Tree propagation is by seed or grafting. Many hundreds of named Mango Tree cultivars exist. In mango orchards numerous cultivars are oftentimes intermixed to improve cross-pollination.
Mango – Bowen
This is the usual variety grown attributable to its first-class quality fruit. This selection is seed grown from hand-picked quality fruit. Bowens are naturally poly-embryonic therefore are virtually true to type from seed. Cropping begins in 3-4years, with same fruit quality to grafted trees.
Mango – Valencia Pride
A superior choice of mango and is considered by some to set the taste standard. The highly colored fruit is large and attractive. The fruit is longer than the Bowen and has a finer skin. It is a robust and upright tree. It is a consistently productive tree with up to 450gms fruit.
