Mamoncillo – melicoccus bijugatus
The Momoncillo is an exceedingly fine-looking tropical fruit tree. It is a member of the Sapindaceae family, the genus Melicoccus. There are 10 species in this genus, some of which also feature edible fruits such as Melicoccus lepidopetala. The Momoncillo fruit tree is also known as Genip nut, Spanish lime and honey berry.
Flowers are small, greenish-white, and aromatic developed in panicles on the rainy season. The Mamoncillo is an illustration of a polyoicous plant, developing bisexual flowers as well as flowers that are entirely male or entirely female.
This fruit tree grows and cultivated for its oval, green fruit and seeds (nuts) but as well as an ornamental tree. Its branches get laden with big clusters of highly flavorsome fruit.
The fruit is categorized as a drupe, about 2.5cm in diameter, look-alike a small green lime with a leathery skin that is reasonably brittle when you touch it.
Underneath the skin there is a thin layer of flavorsome, juicy, sweet or tangy, thick, translucent pulp that adheres to a large oval shape seed (nut) inside each fruit. The fruit vary in size, shape and tasting from tree to tree. They could range from very sweet to highly sour
The sweet fruit is popular with children who are experts at popping open the shell and allowing the smooth, juicy ball of flesh and nut slide into their mouths. They suck the pulp and the nut is at last available for eating.
The sour fruit variety is usually eaten with chili powder, salt, and lemon (Mexico). The nuts are best consumed after being roasted on a fire similar to chestnuts.
The Mamoncillo favors warmer temperatures and its foliage could be injured if the temperature reaches freezing point, with real damage taking place below -4°C.
Propagation is by and large with seeds but also by grafting in order to propagate cultivars.
