Lemon Aspen, Acronychia acidula, also known as White Aspen, is a rain forest, tropical or subtropical, small to medium sized tree, bearing aromatic and acidic fruit. Lemon Aspen is native of Queensland, Australia. It grows largely wild but also in limited commercial bush food orchards and as well in home gardens.

Acronychia acidula is an ornamental tree that can reach up to 15 meters in height and to 2 meters in width. It has dense foliage with beautiful dark green leaves elliptical in shape and up to 25cm long. The Acronychia acidula leaves have numerous oil glands that give off a pleasant citrus smell when crushed. Flowers are born in summertime to early autumn, small and yellow in colour followed by edible fruits.

The Lemon aspen fruit is small, roughly 20-25 mm in diameter, pale green to yellow in color with small dark seeds encased in shells as in apples with a moderate crop yield. It has a sourish, grapefruit and lime like flavor, and is popular in beverages, sauces, chutneys and relishes, aspen flavored mineral water, confectionery and jams with a piquant citrus aroma. The fruit has high antioxidant activity.

Tree propagation can be accomplished from fresh seed which germinates well. Cuttings of strong, current season’s growth are also successful. The tree is fast growing and needs regular pruning to preserve a practical harvesting height. Lemon aspen bears fruit in four years as seedling. It prefers well-drained and productive clay loam soils.

Acronychia acidula is a member of the family Rutaceae the genus Acronychia. It is a hardy plant growing and having in general a healthy appearance in a wide range of environments. Similarly to all other members of the Rutaceae the leaves are fragrant when broken.
