Kaffir Plum, Harpephyllum caffrum, also known as the South African Plum is one of the more common trees known to the gardening world of its indigenous South Africa. Kaffir Plum is a small tropical evergreen, 5-10 meters tall, fruit bearing tree.


It is hardy plant to about -1°C but can be damaged on a lower temperature. Harpephyllum caffrum is a member of the family Anacardiaceae (mango family) the genus Harpephyllum.

The Kaffir Plum has an attractive asymmetrical shape with irregular branching making it a great landscape specimen but as well a good bonsai prospect. The bark is smooth when young, getting rough, dark grey-brown as it grows older. The bark is a popular traditional medicine. It is applied to treat acne and eczema.

Harpephyllum caffrum leaves are bright green, alternate, pinnate with 9 to 13 curving shiny multiple leaflets, pubescent when young, each up to 8cm long. Leaves are crowded together towards the ends, shaping a thick crown at the top of the tree. Male and female, small whitish to yellowish colored flowers, are born on separate trees from summertime to autumn near the ends of the branches.

Kaffir Plum Fruit

The small, oval formed, dark red fruit with a pleasant, sweet and tart-acid flavor, about 3cm long, with a thin skin, follow the flowers from summertime to autumn. Fruits are consumed fresh or used in jellies and jams. With their sweet and sour taste, they are also good to make up rose wine.

Kaffir Plum Propagation Methods

Tree Propagation is easy from seeds. The seeds take up 7 to 12 days to germinate. The wild Kaffir plum can also be propagated by way of cuttings and truncheons. The truncheons should be dried out prior to planting; they can be left lying in the shade for a day or until all exudate has dried.

The hole in which the truncheon is going to be embedded should be filled with a bed of river sand to encourage root establishment and improve drainage. This also assists to fight fungal diseases. The Harpephyllum caffrum is a popular tree in frost-free regions.
