Johnstone River Satinash | Red bud satinash – Syzygium erythrocalyx
Johnstone River Satinash, Syzygium erythrocalyx, also commonly known as Red bud satinash, is an evergreen, tropical rainforest, fruit bearing tree, native to North Queensland Australia. The tree grows up to 15 meters in height and given some shade and plentiful water will develop into a spectacular feature tree.
Leaves are opposite, large, broad, elliptical up to 30 cm long and 11cm wide with prominently dark pink to red veins and red new leaf growth. The thin-textured of foliage requires protection from hot, drying winds. Flowers are borne on trunk and branches, calyx tube red and white stamens. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants.

The edible, juicy dark red fruit o the Johnstone River Satinash is 4cm wide with sweet tasting flesh and a smell like apple makes first-class jams and jellies, sauces and beverages or just consumed straight from the tree.

Tree propagation is by seed. Syzygium erythrocalyx is a striking beautiful tree but only suitable to areas with more than 1600mm of rainfall and with moist but well drained soil. Syzygium erythrocalyx is a member of the family Myrtaceae the genus Syzygium.
