Ivan’s Belle – Sorbus aucuparia-crataegus
Ivan’s Belle>, Sorbus aucuparia-crataegus, is a fruit bearing, unique Russian hybrid variety of Mountain Ash with Hawthorne. The plant is indigenous to Russia. It is a hardy, upright small and attractive tree that grows to 3 meters in height.
Sorbus aucuparia-crataegus has large and very attractive, glossy, dark green, compound leaves like mountain ash. Leaves become an attractive red in autumn. Trees are covered with abundant bunches of white flowers tinged with pink, in springtime, followed by red fruit.
Ivan’s Belle Fruit
The red, tasteful and sweet-tart fruit of Ivan’s Belle is the size of a pie cherry, high in vitamins A and C and it is consumed fresh or used to make pleasant-tasting wine, preserves, pastries and juice. The fruit ripens in fall, with mature trees producing more than 15kg of fruit each.
Fruit is larger than typical Mountain Ash and without the bitterness. The fruit is high in pectin therefore perfect for jams, jellies, sauces and preserves as is its traditional use as a condiment for wild game.
Ivan’s Belle Propagation Methods
Plant propagation is from cuttings. Although the plant is self-fertile, planting two varieties will produce more and better fruit. Seedlings will take 4 to 5 years to fruit from planting. The plant is not bothered by pests or diseases, is hardy to about -30°C and it is impressive in its beauty and productivity but, it has not caught on much outside the countries of origin.
