fruit and nut trees planting Rules
1. Choose healthy-looking trees. If branches are flimsy or broken, if the leaves are worn or discolored, if crooked, or will not stand up on their own without posting — go on to the next tree or another nursery.
2. It is best to plant fruit bearing plants in the autumn — that is when Mother Nature does her planting. This permits the roots to grow slowly over the wintertime months and leads to greater plant health.
3. Plant your new trees at a minimum of 5 meters from your house. Pecan nut trees need to be even double this since they will be very large at maturity. If it will be a small tree when mature, you may be able to plant it a little closer.
4. Dig a hole 2 to 3 times as wide as the tree’s root ball for planting. This will leave the roots to disperse easily through the soil. However, do not plant deeper than already the plant is in its pot. The crown should stay uncovered.
5. Water your recently planted trees on a regular basis until it is established. Trees need deep watering instead of short regular irrigation which will not permeate to their entire root zones.
