Interesting Facts about Fruit and Nut Trees
Apple tree, Malus domestica, is the most common and recognizable fruit-bearing tree. Worldwide, 7500 varieties of apples are grown. Api or Christmas Apple is one of the oldest varieties in existence. Humans have been enjoying apples since at least 6500 B.C.
Baobab, Adansonia digitata, is the largest succulent fruit tree in the world.
Coco de mer, Lodoicea maldivica, is the world’s largest seed. "A single seed may be 30cm long, 90cm in circumference and weigh 20kg". The Coco de Mer fruit is a drupe.
Coconut palm, Cocos nucifera, botanically speaking is not a tree, since there is no bark, no branches, or secondary growth. A coconut palm is a woody perennial monocotyledon with the trunk being the stem. Additionally, the coconut is a fibrous one-seeded drupe not a nut.
Jackfruit, Artocarpus heterophyllus, produces the largest tree-borne fruit. It reaches as much as 36 kg in weight and up to 90 cm long and 50 cm in diameter.
Maidenhair Tree, Ginkgo biloba, is the most cold hardy nut tree. -50 °C (-58 °F). It is known as a 'living fossil', since it is the sole survivor of an ancient group of trees that date back to beyond the time of the dinosaurs.
Peach, Prunus persica, was once known as the Persian apple.
Satsuma Citrus reticulate, is the list cold hardy citrus tree. -10°C (14 °F).
Trifoliate orange, Poncirus trifoliata, is the coldest hardy citrus tree. -30 °C (-22 °F).
Fruit Trees Nut Trees
Fruit and nut trees are special and unlike vegetables they will produce for a lot of years with a better return on effort than anything else in the garden.
In addition to fruit and nut production these trees can be value for shade, timber and as a support for climbing plants. Their crops are good sources of vitamins, minerals, fats and protein and make perfect snacks for kids.
While the planting location of a tree is highly important for a successful production of fruit and nuts, when selecting a fruit tree or a nut tree from your local nursery, some additional factors you should consider are:

* disease and pest resistance.

Durio | Durio dulcis – Durio graveolens

Durio fruit tree, known also as tutong, lahong Durio dulcis, merahan or tabelak Durio graveolens, belongs to the Durio genus with 30 Durio species of which nine produce edible fruits. These large, noble trees are native to south-eastern-Asia and in their natural habitat they grow from 25 to 50 meters, depending on species, often with large buttressed root system. Leaves are oblong, glossy, evergreen with a length of 10-18cm and an under face color of a flaky gold or brown-gold. It is found growing wild in the forests of Borneo.

Flowers are seen in clusters on the older tree branches and the trunk. They are large, feathery, 5 petals, producing copious amounts of nectar and varying in color from pink to white and in size from small to large depending on species.

Durio Fruit

Dorios bear some beautiful globular-shaped fruit that can grow up to 40cm long and 30cm in diameter covered in closely spaced needle-like spines. The fruit shell has a strong distinctive odor.

The edible portions of the durio fruit, inside, is light yellow, orange or bright red, depending on species and it is thick, creamy and delicious. Tutong is the sweetest of all durio fruits while others lack this sweetness they have an agreeable savory like quality, good to be used as a side dish with rice.

The fruit must be picked according to the preferences of the consumer as this varies from region to region. The durian fruit is used to flavor sweets such as biscuits, cakes milkshakes and ice cream. The red-fleshed durian does not drop its fruit when ripe unlike other Durio species. The seed is edible but it must be cooked first.

Durio Propagation Methods

Durio trees can be propagated from seed. It is however, most common these days that cultivars been propagated by layering or grafting methods. Trees grow well in the wet tropics in clay or sandy loam soils from sea levels to an altitude of 1000 meters. Durio belongs to the family Malvaceae the genus Durio
