Pitaya otherwise known as dragon fruit (resemblance of dragon?) is a striking, South American,  nighttime flowering,  fruit bearing plant (cactus) with extremely ornamental skin & flesh fruit, containing many tiny black seeds. To eat the scrumptious fresh fruit cut in half, scoop up the flesh and seeds a lot like a kiwi fruit.


Dragon fruit is a spectacularly beautiful with a sharp color and contour, brilliant flowers and a delicious taste. Generally, these fruits have fruit with several skin colors such as red, yellow and pink. The skin is not edible, but the pulp and black seeds inside the fruit is edible delicious and healthy. They are full of fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Hylocereus undatus is the red skinned climbing cactus that has received international acknowledgment as an ornamental plant for its large, scented, night-blooming flowers. It develops fruit of 1 kg or more. The color of the skin is a picturesque bright red, with clear white flesh and little black seeds. The species is easily identifiable by the three-sided crosswise of its stem and minimal spines. This species cross-pollinates very well with H. polyrhizus.

H. Selenicereus megalanthus has yellow skin and clear to white pulp containing edible black seeds. It has smaller fruit but higher stores of sugar. There are two types for sale Red and Yellow. The red though very beautiful is not as flavorful as the yellow kind and needs cross pollination.

H. polyrhizus has a small fruit up to 1 kg with red skin, dark-red flesh and little black seeds. The stems of this species have more spines.

This robust cactus plant will grow in any soil condition as long as the earth is not water log. It will climb up on anything that could hold its weight including gum trees. The plant will yield fruit inside two to three years from planting. Fruit matures in four weeks and it is accessible throughout summer and autumn. Fruit could be 1kg or more with a melon like flavor.
