Cedar Bay Cherry | Beach Cherry – eugenia reinwardtiana
The Cedar Bay Cherry, Eugenia reinwardtiana, also known as Beach Cherry is a very slow growing evergreen, bushy shrub, reaching up to 4 meters in height and up to 2 meters width and a distinctive Lilly Pilly tree visual aspect. Eugenia reinwardtian, is a native of Australia, a hardy shrub for tropical and subtropical gardens.
The leaves are thick textured, shiny, deep lime-green and ovoid in shape up to 90mm long. New growth development is pink maturing through lime green with a reddish note in winter. The bunches of small, white, five petal flowers are born during spring and summer, followed by sweet tasting, edible, orange-red berries to 15 mm diameter.
The decorative orange-red, scrumptious, sweet, soft white fleshed fruit, with 1 or 2 seeds, demonstrates great potentiality for the exotic fruit and bush food markets due to its high quality. The fruit of the cedar bay cherry can be and it’s commonly consumed fresh but also used in making fruit salads, jam, fruit compote* or sauces.
Plant propagation is by seed. The cedar bay cherry will start producing crops from a young age, actually in its first or second year. It favors and grows well in a sunny location; will handle dry and searing summers or a shaded off position but needs a well drained soil. When grown in the home garden any additional water and plant food will assist to speed up its growth a little. Eugenia reinwardtiana is not especially frost tolerant plant.
