Cambuca | Rubachia glomerata – Marlierea edulis
Cambuca, Marlierea edulis or Rubachia glomerata is very little known, very slowly growing evergreen tree, indigenous to Brazilian southeast coast, reaching 15-20 ft high. Its short trunk holds a wide and dense crown of slender, spreading branches. Cambuca is, even in its native land, very little known and its fruit is almost unknown anyplace else in the world.
The Glossy, curled margin leaves of Marlierea edulis are 5-10cm long, 3-5cm wide, dark green above and slightly downy, light green below. The white flowers, with a cluster of numerous stamens, are born bunched together in groups of 2-8 over the branches axils or dispensed around the stem.
Cambuca Fruit
Cambuca fruit is a very smooth, short stalked, globular berry, 3-6cm in diameter, green at the first, turning yellow to bright orange-yellow when ripen. Under the tough thin skin, there is a soft, juicy, orange-yellow, thick delicious flesh, similar to peaches in texture that has a well-balanced sweet-acid flavor and soft texture.
Fully ripe Cambuca fruit is eaten out of hand. Also, it may be used to make jams, marmalade, pies, juices and ice creams rich in flavor and color. The best time to pick the fruit is during the yellow phase when they can be stored for up to 1 week.
Cambuca Propagation Methods
Plant propagation is by seed. They must be planted soon after removed from the fruit. Seeds are mostly polyembrionic. Cambuca grows in a very hot and high rainfall region; however, it can be very well adapted to many different climates. Well-established trees can stand as much as 2 months of drought without irrigation.
The plant favors a deep, rich, well drained soil and full sun. It is very ornamental due to its dense canopy and the decorative effect when setting their fruits.Marlierea edulis is a member of the family Myrtaceae the genus Plinia.
