Callery Pear, Pyrus calleryana, is medium-sized deciduous tree native to Korea and Japan. This is a fast growing tree up to 20m tall and about 4m wide with a spreading out habit as it ages. Leaves are ovate leathery 4-7cm long and almost as wide, glossy, dark green in color turning into very attractive reds, purples, and oranges in autumn.

Flowers are white 8cm in diameter appearing in late April to early May, very attractive. Fruit is a pome, round, small, only about 1cm in diameter, covered in dots of olive-brown color. The fruit is hard, almost woody until softened by frost then it is readily eaten by birds.

Callery Pear Propagation Methods

Callery Pear is a Very adaptable tree, tolerant of dry and hot conditions and fire blight resistant. It needs full sun. It is easily transplanted during dormant season and propagation is by cuttings. Seedling plants could differ from the selected cultivars and frequently are densely thorny.

Callery pear can be used as rootstock for grafting pear cultivars such as Comice, Bosc or Seckel and especially for nashi pear. This tree is amazingly resistant to sicknesses or blight. There are several commercial cultivars with the most commonly planted the Bradford Pear.
