Brown Pine – podocarpus dispermus
Brown Pine, Podocarpus dispermus, is a primitive species of coniferous tree, that does not look like a conifer, found only on the Tablelands and the Bellenden Ker Range of Queensland in Australia from sea-level to about 2000 meters altitude. Brown Pine is a small to medium tropical evergreen, understory tree, reaching heights of 6 meters to 15 meters.
The Podocarpus dispermus leaves are long, glossy dark green with a prominent midrib and 3 resin ducts below the vascular bundle. Pollen cones axillary, born in groups of 1-3, having f a cylindrical form. Seed cones are axillary on thick peduncles 5-15 mm long with a fleshy red enlarged tip 5-6 mm long giving birth 2 deciduous subtending bracts.
The ‘fruit’ of the Brown Pine is in reality a much distended stalk. This large, fleshy, red plum like globe has a hard, green seed attached underneath. The red flesh is sweet and lush when consumed straight from the tree and makes fabulous desserts and syrups. The seeds can be roasted and eaten.
