Boldo, Peumus Boldus, also known as Baldina and Molina is a slow-growing, fruit bearing, dioecious, shrubby, evergreen tree, 6-8 meters tall, indigenus to central Chile. Boldo can still be found wild in Chile.


The leaves are ovoid and elliptic on short stems, leathery and hard able to stand long dry summer-times and cold rainy winters. They are utilized for tanning, medicinal purposes and for culinary purposes, primarily in Latin America. Leaves have somewhat bitter flavor and camphor-like fragrance.

For culinary purposes Boldo leaves are used in an alike manner to bay leaves and also used as a herbal tea; infused with a little sugar added to taste, mainly in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and surrounding countries in South America.

The sweet-scented, cream color, 1cm wide flowers are borne on terminal cymes in late wintertime either male or female on separate trees, pollinated by various insects. It is not too well known, but Boldo fruits are edible, very tasteful and nutritious.

Boldo fruit appear in middle to late summer and it is small, green, and berrylike. It contains lots of sugars and aid travelers energizing on sunny and dry days. Fruit can be consumed raw or cooked.

In Latin America, boldo is also employed as a form of herbal medicine in particular to support the gallbladder but also to settle down upset stomach. It is oftentimes mixed with other teas to check its flavor. In South America a lot of families keep a boldo plant at home for this role.

However, leaf teas are not to be consumed too often without medical advice. Chemicals in peumus boldus may thin the blood. Those taking blood-thinning medications or those with disorders that have a inclination towards thin blood (thrombocytopenia or hemophilia) shouldn’t take boldo unless under the supervision of a qualified health care practitioner.

Boldo Propagation Methods

Tree propagation is generally by seeds but also half-ripe cuttings. The plant prefers light or loamy well-drained soils as the plant dislikes excessive of moist. It can grow in semi-shade or full sun. Peumus Boldus is a member of the Monimiaceae family the genus Peumus (the sole species in the genus).
