Blue Sausage Fruit, Decaisnea fargesii, also known as Blue Bean Shrub, is an upright, deciduous multi-stemmed fruit bearing shrub, indigenous to eastern Asia, growing to 4meters tall and 4meters wide at a moderate rate. The tree belongs to the same family as the Chocolate Vine, Akebia quinata.

Decaisnea fargesii leaves are compound, dark green, with the main leaf stem getting to 1 meter in length, with 13-25 leaflets, each leaflet 7-15 cm long and 5-10 cm broad. The flowers are hermaphrodite; with both male and female organs. The plant is self-fertile.

Flowers are greenish-yellow, 3-6 cm in diameter, with six sepals and no petals. They are born in spring at the tips of newly upright growth. They can be subject to damage from late frosts in springtime.

Blue Sausage Fruit

Blue Sausage Fruit develops showy fruit that is ornamental and edible. It has a sweet taste with a very nice delicate flavor agreeing to my taste, watermelon-like. The fruit looks like a bright blue sausage or broad bean pod, up to 10cm long and 2-3 cm diameter.

Under the skin, that you peel off in much like you would peel a broad bean pod is revealed a line of seeds that run the entire length of the fruit. The clear pasty jelly-like pulp is edible after cleaning the black shiny seeds.

An easily grown plant Decaisnea fargesii succeeds in most soils but favors a rich moist loamy soil and a protected from cold winds position, Sunny location is fine if the soil is reliably moist, if not, partial shade is preferred since the plant dislikes drought. Decaisnea fargesii is a very cold-hardy when fully dormant.

Blue Sausage Fruit generally fruits well and on a regular basis but take some years from seed to produce fruit. Blue Sausage Fruit is a very ornamental plant and fairly fast growing but it looks haggard and empty in the winter. It does not generally demand any pruning.

Blue Sausage Fruit Proipagation Methods

Plant propagation is by seed and cuttings. Seed best sown as soon as it is mature and will generally germinate well, within 1 – 3 months at 18°C. You can plant seedlings out in late springtime, after the last anticipated frosts. The plant will do well on a range of well draining evenly moist, somewhat fertile soil. Decaisnea fargesii is a member of the family Lardizabalaceae the genus Decaisnea.
