The Blue Flax Lily, Dianella caerulea, also known as Blueberry Lily and Paroo Lily, is a perennial, lumping fruit bearing plant that may be reach up to 1 meter in height and a width of 2.5meters. The plant is a widely distribute indigenous plant of Australia. It is a very hardy (snow and frost hardy) and long-lived plant once established.

Dianella caerulea leaves are upright strap like, alternate, folded, 10- 100 cm long and around 20mm wide, hard, stiff and glossy. Inflorescence is a panicle which goes past the leaves. Flowers are dangling, blue, star shaped with yellow anthers, born on long stems in spring, followed by attractive purple berries. Dianella caerulea is a member of the family Hemerocallidaceae the genus Dianella.

The fruit is a depressed-globular edible berry, bright blue to purple when mature containing shiny black seeds. The fruit while edible and quite sweet, might be sensible one not to gorge on.

Blue Flax Lily Propagation Methods

Propagation is by fresh ripe seed. Seeds germinate after about a month. Blue Flax Lily tolerates coastal exposure and shade, snow and frost. It can tolerate damp conditions but prefers moist well drained soil. It adapts readily to cultivation. Grow in full sun.
