Black Chokeberry – Aronia melanocarpa
Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa, is a deciduous woody fruit producing shrub that generally grows to 1m in height, seldom 3m. It is a member of the Rosaceae family and indigenous to eastern North America. It is typically found in dampish woods and swamps. The leaves are alternate, simple, up to 6 cm long, with hair look-alike projections on the top mid-vein surface. In fall leaves become a strong red color.
The flowers are small, with 5 flower petals; white in color, 1.5 cm diameter, developed in bunches of 10-25 together. The fruit is a false fruit, black, 6-9 mm diameter and very sour. The chokeberries are beautiful plants for gardens that grow well when sown under trees.
Black Chokeberry Fruit
Numerous cultivars of Black Chokeberry have been produced for garden planting, including A. melanocarpa ‘Nero’ and ‘Viking’ that are frequently chosen for their larger fruit suitable for jam-making. The juice from these berries isn’t sweet, but really high in vitamin C and several antioxidants. The berries could be used to produce wine or make jam after cooking. The red chokeberry’s fruit is more palatable and could be eaten raw.
Black chokeberry has drawn scientific interest owing to its deep purple, nearly black pigmentation that develops from heavy contents of phenolic phytochemicals, particularly anthocyanins. The plant develops these pigments principally in the skin of the berries.
A test tube measurement of antioxidant strength or ORAC, exhibits chokeberry has one of the highest amounts yet recorded — 16,062 micromoles of Trolox Eq. per 100 g. Chokeberries’ abundant antioxidant content might be advantageous as a dietary preventative for reducing the danger of diseases induced by oxidative stress. Chokeberries are highly resistant to drought, insects, disease, and pollution.
Black Chokeberry Propagation Methods
Plant propagation is by root softwood cuttings in early summer, or by seed in a seedbed in fall.
