Beach Plum – Prunus maritima
Beach Plum, Prunus maritime, is a fruit bearing shrub, species of plum, indigenous to the Atlantic coast of North America, growing in its natural habitat of sand dunes. It is a thickly branched, deciduous plant, growing 1-2 meters high, although it could grow bigger, up to 4 meters tall, when cultivated in gardens. The Beach Plum has a rounded shape and a spread comparable to that of its height.
Prunus maritime leaves are alternate, elliptical, 3-7cm long and 2-4cm wide, with a sharply toothed margin. They are dull green on top and even duller below, turning colorful in autumn time. The leafage contains hydrocyanic acid, which has been known to kill farm animals that have browsed upon it. The flowers are 1-1.5 cm diameter, borne singly or in small clusters with five white petals and large yellow anthers. It blossoms in late spring to early summer.
Beach Plum Fruit and Uses
The Beach Plum fruit, 1.5-2cm in diameter, is dull purple in color, fleshy and edible; ripen from late summer to early autumn. It can be eaten out of hand and generally is sweet but much smaller in size when compared to other varieties of plums in the market. The fruit is also utilized to make excellent jam and jelly.
Beach Plum Propagation Methiods
Plant propagation is by seed, softwood and root cuttings. Beach Plum‘s natural environment is characterized by drought, low nutrient and water-holding soil, high winds, blowing sand, unstable substrate and high salt levels.
Generally the plant is underutilized and could live up to the growing demand for sustainable fruit production schemes, low-input landscapes, and sand dune restoration. The plant prefers full sun and well-drained soil but it is soil adaptable. It has a fast growth rate but it is short-lived.
A number of cultivars have been chosen for larger and better flavored fruit, including Oceanview and Squibnocket but they are not widely-available. Flava is naturally-occurring cultivar that bears yellow fruit. Prunus maritime is a member of the Rosaceae family the genus Prunus.
