Atherton Oak, Athertonia diversifolia, is a Medium-sized tropical rain-forest tree that grows to 25meters tall. Atherton Oak is indigenous to the far North Queensland in Australia and related to the Macadamia nut.


It is known as the Atherton Oak referable the shape of its young leaves which resemble those of the English oak Quercus robur, which it is unrelated to.

The Athertonia diversifolia leaves are variable in shape, lobed or entire, 12-20 cm long and 5-9 cm wide. Flowers are brown colored and borne on 20-30 cm long racemes.

The lens shaped fruit of the Atherton Oak is 3cm long, has blue skin with a somewhat dry white flesh encircling a hard shell. Inside the shell is a large edible kernel that can be consumed raw or roasted. The nuts also make a tasty addition to desserts, cakes and biscuits.

Tree propagation is by seed. Athertonia diversifolia is a member of the family Proteaceae the genus Athertonia.
