Araca Boi – Eugenia stipitata
Araca Boi, Eugenia stipitata is an ornamental fruit bearing tree or shrub, reaching 5-15 meters in height and having reddish-brown flaky bark and a densely branched habit. It is indigenous to humid, tropical high forests of the Peruvian Amazon Basin. The plant is cold tender and won’t tolerate any freeze.
Eugenia stipitata leaves are opposite, simple, without broadly elliptic, 8-19 cm long, 3.5-9.5 wide, dull, dark green above, with 6-10 pairs of ingrained sidelong veins; pale green with scattered hairs below. Flowers with 5 obovate petals.
Araca Boi Fruit
Fruit is a rounded or spherical berry, 2-10cm long and 2-12cm wide, weighing 50-750g, light green firstly, turning pale or orange yellow when mature, soft, with a thin smooth skin, enclosing a juicy thick pulp that contains approximately 12 seeds. The fruit pulp accounts for more than 60% of the fresh fruit.
The fruit of the Araca Boi is edible, but because is acidic it is not eaten straight but is a great deal used to make juices, flavorings and ice cream. A jelly can be made from the pulp and seed. However, care must be taken since excessive cooking can ruin the beautiful aroma and flavor. Araca Boi fruits may be gathered when they begin to turn yellow, as they continue to mature off the plant. It is a good and worthily as a source of vitamins and minerals. Fruits are very fragile and don’t ship well.
