Amra – Spondias pinnata
Amra, Spondias pinnata, is an uncommon medium sized, 10-15 meters tall, tropical deciduous, fruit bearing tree, with the main trunk straight, a light grey smooth bark and yellowish brown smooth branches. Amra is indigenous to Southeast Asia.
Leaves are attractive light, 30-40 cm long with 10-15 cm long stalks, compound with 5 -11 opposite leaflets. Leaflets are stalked, ovate-oblong to elliptic-oblong, 7-12 cm long, 4-5 cm wide, with a paper like texture.
Flowers are little, white to cream, with ovate-oblong petals, about 2.5mm long and 1.5mm wide, borne in panicles 25-35 cm long at the end of branches, bisexual and uni-sexual on the same tree.
Amra Fruit
Amra fruit is a drupe look-alike to a small mango (in the related genus Mangifera), 4-10 cm long, ellipsoidal to elliptic-ovoid and yellowish orange when ripe, fleshy, and with a large single seed. Fruits are edible with a sweet and sour but first-class flavor and full of Vitamin C.
Amra Propagation Methods
Tree propagation is by seeds. Spondias pinnata will grow well in a wide variety of loam or soils touching on to most average garden situation. Spondias pinnata is a member of the family Anacardiaceae the genus Spondias.
