The American Pawpaw, Asimina triloba, also known as Michigan Banana is a attractive small deciduous fruit bearing tree or large shrub. It is indigenous to Eastern North America, growing to a height of 11 meters, seldom to 14 meters with a trunk diameter of 20-30 cm. Asimina triloba is a member of the Family Annonaceae the genus asimina.

The spirally formatted, broad pointed, tropical-like leaves are 15-30 cm long, with an acute apex and an entire margin. They are thick, bright-green, deciduous turn into a attractive yellow-green color in autumn. Leaves contain toxic annonaceous acetogenins, making them unpalatable to most insects.

The flowers are hermaphrodite, produced in early springtime at the same time as or just before the new leaves appear. Each flower is dark red or chocolate colored, 2-5 cm in diameter, with three sepals and six petals and with a foul smell they are followed by large cylindrical, edible fruit.

The Edible, fragrant, 10-15cm long and 4cm wide fruit of the American Pawpaw tree is a large yellowish green berry with a soft flesh. Fruit is consumed fresh or cooked made into preserves, pies, ice cream and various other desserts.

American Pawpaw is a hardy plant to about -20°C. It favors growing in deep rich (loamy), moist soil; tolerant of wet soils, and a sunny or partly shade location. Young plants should be given some shelter for their first year or two.

Tree propagation is by seed usually germinated in 1-3 months at or above 15°C. Asimina triloba is self-fertile, commences bearing fruit in 4 – 6 years from seed and yields up to 30 kilos per tree. Best plants are obtained by planting them out into their permanent positions as young as possible.
