Acid Drop Vine | Zig-Zag Vine – melodorum leichhardtii
Acid Drop Vine, Melodorum leichhardtii, also known as Zig-Zag Vine is a tall or bushy, fruit bearing woody climber, indigenous to tropical rainforest of Eastern Australia and PNG.
Leaves of the Acid Drop Vine are simple, alternate, shiny dark green with rippled margins, honey-scented when crushed and with sparse, rusty hairs on the under surface. Flowers are born in pairs, orange-brown, in color and fragrant with six thick petals, opening in the evening.
With several segments, the globular, orange fleshed fruits of Acid Drop Vine are 4-6 cm long with one to four seeds. The flesh is edible and has a variety of usages. It has a very pleasing spicy orange-sherbet flavor, and is used in making sauces for gourmet dishes but also to make liqueur. Fruit is found on the vine any time of the year.
Melodorum leichhardtii is a member of the family Annonaceae the genus Melodorum a bushy easily grown species which can be cut back as a shrub in the garden or allowed to climb. Melodorum leichhardtii vine propagation is by fresh seed. Seeds germinate dependably in 2 months.
